BRAVE SHOWER - CASTLE ROCK PROJECT
Hello everyone!!
In this blog post, I’m sharing all the details of my first bathroom renovation from 2019, Castle Rock Primary Suite Renovation. When my client brought me in, most of her home had already been renovated. The only space left was her bedroom and bathroom. She let me know up front that her style was contemporary, and my goal was to bring that same contemporary style from her common spaces into her personal space.
The home was built over 30 years ago, so there was turquoise all over the bathroom, including a wall mural. The shower, which gave ode to the home’s architecture, was round, completely enclosed and made of glass blocks. There was a double vanity with a single, large mirror and two vanity lights above the mirror. The tub was encased in tile, and there was carpet on the floors….yes, CARPET! There was also another little space opposite the shower with two big beautiful windows and a sliding door that lead to the pool. This space was slightly separated from the bathroom by a glass block half wall about 36” high. It was not very well insulated and a constant chill was in the air. There was a makeup area in the middle of the vanity that she had no use for. Lastly, there was a leak in her closet that was starting to affect her bathroom. It had gotten so bad that she had to remove some of the carpeting from that area in the bathroom.
First things first, I did a walk through of the home and took measurements. Once I had those measurements, I began to source materials that fit her contemporary needs as well as her functional needs for the space. After choosing the materials, I began working on a rendering of what her new space would look like. She approved of the more open concept, and after 1 or 2 rounds of selections, we were ready to get to work. The space was completely gutted, stripped to the foundation, to make room for the new design.
In order to combat the draftiness of her bathroom, heating coils were installed under the tile flooring, and a thermostat to control the coils was installed on the entry wall. In the new vanity, the middle was no longer a makeup area but a pull-out hamper. We were able to fix the leak but ended up having to dig up the driveway in the process. That’s where the source was. So, every time it rained, her bathroom was flooding from the foundation, causing more damage. We found two additional pipes that needed to be fixed in the process, one in the shower and one in one of the sinks.
Now her bathroom is a contemporary sanctuary and is functional for her specific needs. Check out the before and after pics below...
